Moving to the Land Down Under

For several months now, Po and I have been planning to live, work, and travel around the massive land mass floating on the other side of the globe commonly known as Australia. It’s sunny, full of beautiful people and beaches, national parks, healthy fresh food, world class surfing, so what’s not to love. Obviously, I’m choosing to overlook the crazy deadly wildlife and number of creepy crawlies that are out to kill you in Australia. What can you do though, everywhere has its pros and cons.

The two of us have been working and living aboard superyachts for some time now, him much longer than I, and are ready for a change and to live a more independent life on land whilst still managing to travel. Conveniently for US and UK citizens under 30, Australia offers a one year working holiday visa. This is actually so kind of Australia to offer us this Visa to make it possible to live and work in their amazing country since for Americans, we can only get this sort of visa in 4 other countries. It is different for those like Anthony from the motherland, he is able to do this in many more places like any country in the EU, at least for now, cough cough Brexit.

As far as a plan is concerned, we have a general overview of what we’d like to accomplish during our year abroad. For the nitty gritty details though, those have yet to be ironed out. With experience in the hospitality industry working in restaurants and aboard superyachts, I’m hoping to scrounge up some hospitality work in a café or restaurant. Anthony is unsure but motivated to seek out the best “backpacker” jobs available in the area we settle into. A lot of the jobs offered to backpackers or working holiday travelers like us are more of the lower tier jobs, which is understandable considering that we will inevitably leave at some point. Our Visa only allows us to be employed at the same workplace for 6 months maximum.

The generalized plan though, is to find a place to settle and work for 3-6 months, travel around the whole of Australia in a campervan for 3-4 months, then pick a place to reside and work for our remaining time left in the year before returning home. Seems like a pretty sound plan, right? We’ll see how it goes!

More to come xx
